The Gruffalo

English writer Julia Donaldson has published more than 150 books. She began her career by writing songs for television and a number of plays for school. She is a Children’s Laureate.

The Gruffalo is a story about a mouse who goes on a journey through the forest. She meets several dangerous animals – a fox, an owl and a snake. Each of them wants to eat the mouse.

They invites the mouse to their home for a meal but the clever mouse tells each animal that he has a friend Gruffalo and he is coming to the dinner with him.

The mouse describes his imagined friend Gruffalo as a big monster who eats animals like foxes, owls and snakes. Each animal gets scared and runs away.

The mouse is very happy and sings a song that goes something like: “There’s no such thing as Gruffalo!” Suddenly the mouse notices something big – an awful monster. It is Gruffalo. At first he wants to eat the mouse but he claims he’s the most dangerous animal in the forest and takes Gruffalo with him to prove that all animals are scared of the mouse. When the mouse threatens that he will eat Gruffalo, he has no other option but run as quick as possible.

Reviews:

I read this beautiful book every night for my two children – 2 and 4 years of age. They love this book so much.

It is my 3 y.o. son’s favourite book. He can recite it word for word when I read the Gruffalo for him.

This is the right book for children. With beautiful illustrations, rhyming text and beautiful characters. I have 3 kids, 2 to 6 years old. They all love this book.
